PC Upgrade: How, When, and Why to Update Your Machine

A Gaming PC, unlike a console, can be updated component by component to prolong its lifespan and improve performance. Upgrading is essential to keep up with advances in graphic technology, such as Ray Tracing and the increasing demands for Resolution and FPS.

1. When is it Time for an Upgrade?

There are three clear signs that your PC needs to be updated:

  • FPS Drop: If you cannot maintain a satisfactory frame rate (e.g., 60 FPS) in the latest games, even with settings on minimum.
  • Bottleneck: When one component drastically limits the performance of another. The most common is the CPU limiting the potential of a newer, more powerful Graphics Card.
  • Excessive Loading Time: If you are still using an HDD, the transition to an SSD or NVMe is the most impactful upgrade for the daily experience.

2. The Main Upgrade Focus (Priorities)

The order of priority for improvements, depending on the desired impact:

  • Priority #1: GPU (Graphics Card): For maximum impact on graphic quality and the number of FPS at high resolution. It is generally the most expensive component.
  • Priority #2: Storage (NVMe SSD): The cheapest upgrade that has the biggest impact on boot speed and loading times (see NVMe vs. SATA).
  • Priority #3: RAM: Increasing from 8GB to 16GB, or from 16GB to 32GB (for multitasking and streaming), improves the overall fluidity of the system.
  • Priority #4: CPU: Essential if a bottleneck is occurring or if it is necessary to support a high-end GPU.

Note: A CPU upgrade may also require changing the Motherboard (if changing generation or brand) and the Cooling system.

3. Before Buying: Compatibility and Efficiency

Always ensure physical compatibility (case size, sockets) and power compatibility. A new GPU and CPU consume more energy, meaning your Power Supply Unit (PSU) must be able to provide the necessary power to avoid stability issues and spikes in Energy Consumption.
