According to the website Tarreo, a Reddit user, Maple-Sizzurp, made a nostalgic discovery when he found his old Game Boy Color along with the Pokémon Yellow cartridge from his childhood. What makes this find even more special is the presence of a Mew, the legendary Pokémon that could only be obtained at official Nintendo events during the first generation of games.

Before Nintendo consoles adopted online features, such as the Nintendo DS and Wii, physical events were the only way players could obtain rare Pokémon. At that time, many fans would travel to fairs or specific events to download these exclusive creatures onto their portable devices.

Maple-Sizzurp recalled that his Mew was obtained at a special event in Canada, the “N64 Ultimate Gamers Tour,” which took place between May and September of 2000. During this tour, participants had the chance to play Pokémon Stadium, test other Nintendo 64 titles, and most importantly, download Mew to their Pokémon Yellow versions. This event was particularly significant to promote the launch of Pokémon Stadium, which introduced Pokémon battles with 3D graphics.

However, Maple-Sizzurp’s discovery also brings to light an important concern: the internal battery of the Game Boy cartridge, responsible for saving data and game progress, has a limited lifespan. A failure of this battery could result in the loss of all progress and exclusive Pokémon.
