Age Ratings (PEGI) & Content Labels
The PEGI age rating system helps players, parents, and educators understand whether a game’s content is appropriate for specific ages. These labels indicate levels of violence, language, fear, discrimination, drugs, and in-game purchases, promoting safe and informed play.
What Is PEGI?
PEGI (Pan European Game Information) was introduced in 2003 to standardize game age classifications across Europe. It’s officially recognized by most European countries and major game publishers.
PEGI doesn’t rate the quality of a game but rather the nature of its content, helping players and parents make informed choices.
PEGI Age Categories
- PEGI 3: Suitable for all ages. No violence or frightening sounds/images.
- PEGI 7: May contain some scenes or sounds that could scare young children.
- PEGI 12: Includes mild violence or language — often found in fantasy settings.
- PEGI 16: Realistic violence or sexual content, suited for older teens.
- PEGI 18: Adult-only content — extreme violence, gambling, or explicit themes.
PEGI Content Descriptors
In addition to age ratings, PEGI uses icon descriptors to indicate the main reasons for the classification. Common icons include:
- Violence
- Bad Language
- Fear
- Drugs
- Discrimination
- Sex
- Gambling
- In-Game Purchases

Why Age Ratings Matter
PEGI ensures that games are played responsibly. Parents can use parental controls on consoles and platforms to restrict access to inappropriate content, while players can make informed choices based on their comfort and values.
